Why Celebrating Birthdays Matters More Than Ever
I'll admit it—I love birthdays.
Not because of the presents.
Not because of getting older (although I've decided that's a privilege, too).
I love birthdays because they give each of us something we don't often allow ourselves in the middle of busy lives: permission to pause.
One day.
Just one day each year that says, "Today, we're celebrating you."
As I've gotten older—and especially after losing Todd—that day has taken on an entirely different meaning.
We Never Really Know
One of the hardest lessons grief teaches us is that tomorrow isn't promised.
None of us know how many birthdays we'll get.
None of us know how many birthdays we'll celebrate with the people we love.
That's not meant to be depressing.
If anything, it's the opposite.
It's a reminder that every birthday is worth celebrating because it's another year of memories, lessons, laughter, mistakes, growth, and simply...being here.
Every birthday is a gift.
Be Present for One Day
Life moves fast.
Work deadlines.
Laundry.
Appointments.
Kids.
Grandkids.
A never-ending to-do list.
Birthdays have a funny way of interrupting all of that.

They encourage us to slow down long enough to enjoy a dinner with family, laugh until our stomach hurts with friends, take a weekend trip, buy the concert tickets, or simply sit on the porch with coffee and appreciate another sunrise.
It doesn't have to be extravagant.
It just has to be intentional.
For one day, we get to be fully present.
And honestly...how often do we give ourselves permission to do that?
Celebrate Your Way
Some people throw big parties. (Ben loves this!)
Others would rather disappear to a cabin for the weekend.
Some always order the same birthday cake they've loved since childhood. (I like to get chicken wings!)

Others try something completely new every year. (I like to take a vacation to somewhere I have never been!)
There isn't a right way to celebrate.
The point isn't how you celebrate.
The point is that you do.
Celebrate because you're here.
Celebrate because someone loves you.
Celebrate because you've survived things that once felt impossible.
Celebrate because life deserves more joy than we often give it.
That's Why We Created Birthday Month

This year, we celebrated all month long at Grief & Joy by giving away some of our favorite greeting cards.
Watching people nominate friends, share stories, and celebrate one another reminded me exactly why I started this company in the first place.
Life is hard.
But it's also full of moments worth recognizing.
Sometimes a funny card.
Sometimes a thoughtful conversation.
Sometimes simply reminding someone that they're seen.

Here's My Birthday Wish for You
Whether your birthday is tomorrow or six months from now, I hope you celebrate it.
Take the day off if you can.
Go somewhere you've always wanted to visit.
Eat the cake.
Buy yourself the flowers.
Have dinner with the people who matter most.
Try something you've never done before.
Or simply sit quietly and appreciate how far you've come.
Because birthdays aren't really about getting older.
They're about getting another chance.
Another chance to love.
Another chance to laugh.
Another chance to grow.
Another chance to create joy—even if grief is still part of your story.
At Grief & Joy, that's what we believe life is all about.
So here's to another year.
May we celebrate every single birthday we're fortunate enough to have—and never miss the opportunity to tell the people we love just how much they mean to us.
