Why Do I Still Not Feel Like Myself? (And Other Completely Normal 3am Thoughts)
It’s 3:17am.
You’re awake.
Not in a full spiral… but definitely not thriving.
Your brain is doing that thing where it opens 47 tabs at once, including:
- something mildly embarrassing you said 10 years ago
- your entire life direction
- whether you should start waking up at 5am and “feel more productive”
- and how do I keep the bats out of the horse barn
And then—right on cue:
“Why do I still not feel like myself?”
Ah yes. That one.
🌙 Let’s Just Say This Out Loud
Not feeling like yourself is deeply unsettling.
Because it’s not just:
“I’m tired” or “I’m stressed.”
It’s more like:
“Who even is this version of me and why is she in charge?”
You forget things mid-sentence.
You miss appointments.
You take wrong turns going places you have been many times.
You open your phone and immediately forget why.
You’re functioning… but with a slight sense of confusion at all times.
🌿 Before You Panic—This Is Actually Normal
This feeling tends to show up when you’ve been through… well, anything:
- grief
- loss
- menopause (because hormones said “let’s mix things up”)
- burnout
- big life changes
- or just an extended period of life being a lot
In other words:
This isn’t random.
This is what happens when you’ve been carrying more than usual for longer than usual.
☕ You Didn’t Lose Yourself (Even If It Feels Like It)
I know it feels like the “old you” disappeared.
The one who:
- had more energy
- remembered things
- didn’t need 3–5 business days to respond to a text
But you didn’t lose yourself.
You’re just… not operating on the same version anymore.
Think of it like this:
You updated overnight.
No instructions.
Some features missing.
New ones you don’t fully understand.
Naturally, it feels weird.
🌱 You’re Not Broken—You’re in Between
This is the part no one really explains:
You’re not who you used to be.
But you’re not fully who you’re becoming yet either.
So you’re just… existing in this in-between space where:
- things feel unfamiliar
- your reactions are different
- your tolerance for certain things is lower (honestly, good)
- and your energy is… unpredictable at best
It’s not your favorite place to be.
But it is part of the process.
🌼 Signs You’re Actually Still You
Let’s bring it back to reality for a second.
You’re still you if:
- you still care (even when you’re tired of caring)
- you still show up (even if it’s messy)
- you still laugh (mostly at my own screw ups!)
- you still want things to feel better
Also, if you’ve recently said:
“I just need to get my life together”
while looking at an overwhelming to-do list…
That’s basically a personality trait at this point.
You’re good.
🌙 Why It Feels Like It’s Taking Forever
Because this isn’t a quick reset.
You’re not just “getting back to normal.”
You’re:
- processing
- adjusting
- letting go of things that don’t fit anymore
- rebuilding in ways you didn’t plan for
- figuring out a new path forward and making big decisions
That takes time.
More time than we want.
And definitely more time than social media suggests.
💛 For the 3am Overthinkers
If you’re lying there wondering why you don’t feel like yourself yet…
Try this thought instead:
What if you’re not behind?
What if you’re just… in the middle of becoming someone who can carry life differently?
(Not necessarily better. Just differently.)
💌 A Small, Slightly Sleep-Deprived Reminder
You don’t need to have it all figured out.
You don’t need to rush this version of you.
And you’re definitely not the only one awake thinking about this.
If someone popped into your mind while reading this…
There’s a decent chance they’re feeling it too.
